Wall paintings in Pompeii

Fresh frescoes! It seems to originate from. If it is fresh, you can feel more familiar with the frescoes.

"Raw" "New"

It was in the summer of 2022 that I went to see the murals and mosaics of Pompeii.

At that time, all I could do was walk around.

Walking on the stones, let alone the large, brightly lit cobblestones, requires a surprising amount of balance. I feel like I was walking seriously.

It would be difficult to visit everything in one day.

It is said to be about 14 times the size of Tokyo Dome.

A year has passed since then, and since December of this year, I have been seeing a lot of news about the Pompeii murals.

So I check the Italian news and see some news articles focusing on the Pompeii murals.

I realized that there are a lot of murals that I haven't seen yet.

And now I'm reading a book called ``Dye, Pigment, and Art Materials in the World of Color: A Cultural History of Ethnicity and Color'' (Marr Publishing).

If you spend your time doing that,

I realized once again that I love murals.

I also feel like going back to Pompeii to see the murals that I haven't seen yet.

When I was in college, I majored in archeology. I also enjoyed the folklore lecture. The folklore and archeology classes were interesting and piqued my interest. During my university years, I often did fieldwork in Japan.

I feel like I have a premonition of a continuation now.

The relationship between land, culture and art is an important element. Land shapes history, traditions, lifestyles and values. Art is deeply involved and influential here. In fact, I'm experiencing it myself right now.

Pompeii is the place to experience it. When you go to a place, you can imagine the people who existed there and lived there. I can't help but feel strange.

How were these buildings, roads, and murals created? ?Many questions arise.

For example, in order to paint a mural, you need to acquire all kinds of knowledge from everyday life. Otherwise, the Pompeii murals would not have been created at that time. And even though Pompeii was destroyed by the massive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, the remaining mural paintings prove this. Of particular note is Pompeian Red (cinnabar). I can't believe it was 3000 years ago. I can feel the energy that exists there. It's thrilling to be able to see that.

With this in mind, I am making plans for next year, 2024, and as the saying goes”All roads lead to Rome” in this case for me all roads lead to Pompeii
