The beginning is a word that has become popular in Europe after the beginning of World War I. Mainly means surrealism and abstract painting. I see it as an action that takes action toward the world and toward myself.
The range of avant-garde art expanded significantly after the war. And as it expanded, the scope of avant-garde art became ambiguous. The military term "avant-garde" has the nuance of an attack on something. It used to be a conservative "academic" art centered around the French Academy of Arts. After World War I, it was an attack on the avant-garde art of previous generations and the capitalist system. Since the 1970s, it has become an era in which "enemy" cannot be seen even for artists and thinkers. There are simulationism that uses high capitalism as an enemy and diverts its advertisements and products in reverse, and feminist art that uses gender as an enemy. The authority of society and art that should be overthrown as before has disappeared. And I feel that it is an era in which we cannot see where art and art are heading.
